Trying the Traditional Cornish Pasty
At the heart of Cornwall’s culinary culture lies the humble pasty - a sort of savoury pastry-pie packed full of meat, potato and vegetables that’s been a mainstay of Cornish cuisine for centuries. And it’s the perfect kind of snack for a camping trip in Cornwall! I didn’t even have to look far on my camping holiday to find a delicious pasty - they’re everywhere! From the local pasty-maker at the market in St Ives, to the beach-side bakeries of Penzance, to the tourist hotspots of Polperro and Padstow – it seemed as though pasties were the only thing that anybody was talking about! I couldn’t possibly resist, so I tried my first genuine Cornish pasty with much excitement. It was packed full of minced beef, potatoes, chives, and a mixture of herbs, all served up in a thick, golden-brown crust that had been crisped up to perfection. Huge chunks of potato and beef filled the inside and all the flavours melded together perfectly, creating a taste sensation that no words can do justice to. If I could have stayed at the market all day, I certainly would have. My pasty-eating adventure didn’t end there though - I also went back the next day and sampled one of the famous ‘clotted cream’ pasties. This was a traditional sweet pasty, filled with a mix of strawberry jam and cream which was sandwiched between two thick slabs of pastry. It was sweet, gooey and succulent, exactly what I’d hoped for from a pasty! In short, I certainly think I’d made the most of Cornwall’s pasty culture during my camping holiday in the region - after all, these pastries have such a compelling history that it would have been a crime to miss out.
Experiencing the Rare Ales of Harbour Brewing Co.
Ah, Cornwall. The warmth of the sun, the sparkling sand, the vast shoreline… and of course, the most important thing of all: craft beer! I was delighted to explore the many pubs and micro-breweries popping up across the area on my recent camping trip. Leading my list of must-try brews was the exquisite selection at Harbour Brewing Co Cornwall. This independent brewery located near Padstow is part of Cornwall’s vibrant microbrewery scene, and its products were some of the finest I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting! I ordered a “taster tray” from Harbour Brewing Co so I could get a feel for their signature beers. The team there was friendly and passionate about their creations, talking me through all of the flavours and aromas that went into each ale. I sampled everything from the classic pale ale to the award-winning India pale lager, and each was brewed to perfection. I’ve tried plenty of craft beer on my travels, but Harbour Brewing Co is a truly unique experience. Ambience-wise, it’s a charming atmosphere, with an old-school nautical vibe. The bar is decorated with traditional fishing nets and pulleys, making it feel as if you’ve stepped onto an old-fashioned Cornish schooner. Aside from the fantastic ales, Harbour Brewing Co also makes an incredible selection of cider and mixes, each crafted with natural Cornish ingredients. If you’re ever in the area, check out this wonderful brewery and taste some of the most delicious and rare ales available. Cheers!
